23rd ANNUAL CONFERENCe, auckland - VIaduct Events Centre, 4-7 December 2012

Developing global citizens: Enhancing the student experience through embedded support and academic services

I am excited to offer you an invitation to attend the ISANA International Education Association's 23rd Annual Conference in Auckland. The theme for this meeting is “Developing Global Citizens: Enhancing the Student Experience through Embedded Support and Academic Services”.

As education institutions start to recognise the important developmental role of support and academic services, they are also starting to look for ways to embed these services within the curriculum and student experience. More and more, institutions need to find ways of developing students who are globally engaged and competent; students who recognise their parts as global citizens. The 2012 conference explores the concept of global citizenship for our students, and discusses ways in which support and academic services can be part of that developmental processes.

More and more, global mobility, academic learning services, student transition, student volunteering and global internships are seen as crucial to the student experience. Arguably, these services should no longer be seen as support services but central to student development, and should be embedded in the curriculum. We welcome papers, workshops and discussions around how educational institutions can achieve this lofty aim.

ISANA began as the Overseas Student Advisers’ Network (OSAN) in 1989. It was formed as a special interest group of the Australian and New Zealand Student Services Association (ANZSSA), as a network of people in new roles of delivering support services to international students. OSAN, later renamed the International Student Advisers’ Network of Australia, conducted conferences, and addressed issues of international student experiences in Australia. It very rapidly expanded to include New Zealand members and, in 2002, a New Zealand branch was formed. It has also expanded well beyond being of interest just to student service personnel to encompass all aspects and professions involved with international education. Because of the expansion of membership in 1999 ISANA adopted the name, ISANA: International Education Association Inc
